4-H Shooting Sports Project

Shooting Sports is one of the most popular 4-H projects in Larimer County and is as one of the largest 4-H Shooting Sports programs in the state of Colorado. Members learn how to care for and handle shooting sports equipment safely. There are numerous options, from rifles to bows. Members also have the opportunity to hone their skills and test themselves by competing in the county shoot and, if they qualify, the Colorado 4-H State competition.

Larimer County 4-H offers members the opportunity to participate in Shooting Sports in multiple, varied disciplines. Members enroll in the Shooting Sports project, and then each discipline separately.

  • Air Rifle or Air Pistol
  • Archery
  • Muzzleloading
  • Outdoor Skills
  • Shotgun
  • .22 Pistol *
  • .22 Rifle
  • Western Heritage *

* .22 Pistol and Western Heritage require members to have completed at least one year in 4-H Shooting Sports with fireline experience. There are also additional age requirements. Visit (opens in new tab) for specifics.

Tip Sheet

All project manuals are received through the Larimer County 4-H Extension office. These will be distributed to 4-H members through their organizational leaders (club leaders) after enrollment is complete. For more information on enrollment visit Join 4-H (opens in new tab).

E-log / Record Book

4-H Record Books are also called e-Records. Each project has its own record book that members are required to complete each year. The links to e-Records in the specific project areas are below. Record books are turned in at Interview Judging before our County Fair. In June, you will need to schedule an interview for each of your project areas and bring your record book with you to Interview Judging the week of the Larimer County 4-H Fair.

We have more information about how to fill out your record books here (link opens in a new tab).

4-H has its own specific requirements for equipment. We recommend that you do not purchase equipment until after orientation. We also offer members the opportunity to use county equipment and try the discipline and various equipment before deciding what they are interested in and want to buy.

Hunter Education

Hunter education is NOT required to take part in Shooting Sports in Larimer County 4-H. Members can participate in practices and county shoots without having a hunter education card. However, to be eligible to compete at the state competition, participants must submit their hunter education card before the July 1, 2022 deadline.
We encourage all Shooting Sports members to get their hunter education card. We will be hosting an Internet Conclusion Course (the in-person portion) on March 26–27, 2022 for those who have completed the online portion of the course. You can read more and register for the courses by visiting Colorado Parks & Wildlife’s site here: (opens in new tab).
